Halitosis refers to bad breath, mostly originates from the oral cavity. One
of the causes of this bad breath is hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which is the main
component of the volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). Hydrogen sulfide is
produced by the degradation of proteins in the oral cavity by anaerobic bacteria
which mainly accumulate on the dorsum surface of the tongue. Tongue clean
can reduce halitosis by decreasing the accumulation of microorganisms on the
dorsum surface of the tongue. The aim of this study is to determine differences on
oral H2S level in subjects with coated tongue before and after tongue cleansing
using a tongue scraper and toothbrush, as well as to compare the ability of tongue
scraper and toothbrush in oral H2S level.

This is a quasi experimental study, performed on 30 subjects who divided
into 2 groups and selected by consecutive sampling method. Initial H2S level were
measured using Oral Chroma
TM
, then group 1 (n = 15) were given a tongue
scraper to clean their tongue, while group 2 (n = 15) were given a toothbrush to
clean their tongue. Tongue clean was done twice/day for 3 consecutive days,
then H2S level was re-measured. Data were analyzed statistically using the
Wilcoxon test and independent t-test.
sing The results showed that tongue clean using a tongue scraper can
reduce oral H2S level significantly (p = 0.001), as well as using a toothbrush (p =
0.001). Tongue cleansing using a tongue scraper can reduce oral H2S level greater
than toothbrush (p = 0.000). The conclusion of this study suggest that cleaning the
tongue using a tongue scraper and toothbrush can reduce oral H2S level and a
tongue scraper can reduce oral H2S level greater than a toothbrush |
