Summary:Less benefit of symptomatic treatment in children experience common cold to decrease duration and severity of common cold. Zinc is use for increase cellular and humoral immunity. Zinc is expected have a role to relieve severity of common cold. This study designed as double-blind randomized controlled trial, had been conducted at Public Health Center of Umbulharjo I, Kotagede II and Gedongtengen, Yogyakarta upon 114 child samples that were selected using consecutive sampling method to fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fifty seven children of treatment group (zinc group) and 57 children of placebo group. Common cold was diagnosed clinically using American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines 2006. Research subjects were randomized using computer into two main therapy groups, zinc and placebo. Both groups were monitored for 7 days. Score system was used to assess the improvement severity of symptoms and later being analyzed using chi-square test. Result shows that no significant difference in basic characteristic of the subjects in both therapy groups. After 7 days of treatment, no significantly difference in proportion of clinical improvement in zinc group with those of in placebo group upon children with common cold, subject undergoing treatment for zinc showed 80,7% while placebo 78,9% with p value of 0,83. There was 2 child suffered from vomitting after receiving zinc, and 2 child suffered from sleepy in placebo group. As a conclusion, zinc did not decrease severity of common cold compared to placebo in treating children 3-5 years old.
