All graduate students are taught formal research skills courses and then they must complete an independent masters' research project to demonstrate their acquisition of basic skills and to fulfill graduation requirements. However, relatively little is known about the student perceptions of their research development in their degree programs. This thesis presents results from a small study on student perceptions of their development as novice researchers, and identified some of the factors that assisted and blocked their research development. A sample of Cambodian masters level students (n=43) completed both researcher-designed online, and pen and paper questionnaire. The findings revealed students' held a largely positive attitude toward research for knowledge advancement and creation. It identified that the students needed both academic and non-academic support to facilitate their research learning and development. The dual factors of institutional and individual factors played equally important roles in providing support. A unique finding in the context of this study was that inadequate English skills emerged as an important factor in a student's confidence in their research learning and development.enRoyal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP)Research development barrierStudent perceptions of their research developmentCambodian Post-Graduate Students' Perceptions of Their Development as Beginning ResearchersThesis |
