Summary: | The Latin word abacus can be traced back to the Greek words abax and abakon (which can be rendered as "table" or "tablet"), which may have arisen from the Semitic word abq (which can be translated as "sand"). The abacus is one of the numerous types of counting devices that may be used to count massive amounts of data. Contrary to technological advancements, shops in Asia and "Chinatowns" around North America continue to use the abacus to conduct their business. The abacus may be able to compete with more current technologies such as electronic calculators in some circumstances. The normal abacus is capable of performing addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Besides, the abacus is capable of extracting square and cubic roots. The beads are controlled with one's index finger or thumb. Kids may easily learn to operate the abacus because all they have to do is slide the beads down a string. This creates a visual picture of the situation in the child's mind. Their ability to answer problems independently will improve as they continue to practice with the abacus. When learning on the abacus, kids develop a strong sense of timing and spatial orientation. In addition to helping kids sharpen their minds and enhance their focus, using an abacus can also help them engage the brain's sensors, foster a photographic memory, and improve their logical reasoning abilities. |
