Summary: | C. Fluminea or smoked "etak" is one of the special foods among Kelantanese. When C. Fluminea gets contaminated with harmful microorganism, it caused serious foodborne disease to the human that consumed the bivalves. This study described characteristics of Salmonella sp. bacteria isolated from smoked Asian clam. Salmonella sp. is a well known of foodborne disease pathogen. It is a common organism found in the human gut and intestinal tract and also in the environment. There are significant data shows that Salmonella sp. was exist in smoked Asian clam. The objectives of this study were to isolate and identify Salmonella sp. in smoked Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea). In this present study, bacteria isolated from smoked Asian clam using Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate agar (XLD agar) and identified through bacterial biological test and conventional identification kit. In the present study, there were 19 types of antibiotics susceptibility were applied. The antibiotics that used in the present study were chloramphenicol, novobiocin, erythromycin, compound suphonamides, ampicilin, oxolinic acid, doxycycline, fosfomycin, lincomycin, nalidixic acid, amoxicillin, gentamicin, suphamethoxazole, flumequine, colistin sulphate, spiramycin, oleandomycin, florfenicol and tetracycline. After the inoculation, the diameters of the bacteria were measured inhibition zone in millimeter (mm). The result of antibiogram were interpret into resistant (R), intermediary sensitive (I), sensitive (S) by refer to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) (2006). Samples were also evaluated for the presence of Salmonella sp. by using Gram staining and blood agar. The result showed that 8 out of 19 antibiotics namely novobiocin, erythromycin, ampicilin, lincomycin, suphamethoxazole, colistin sulphate ,spiramycin, and oleandomycin were intermediary sensitive toward Salmonella sp. Hence, the rest of 11 of antibiotics showed resistant to Salmonella sp. with the range 10% to 100%. In the present study, it can help to establish database inform t a ion of antimicrobial that is benefit for future study. Thus, this study provides useful information about the application of antibiotics in medicine, public health and consumption awareness. |
