Summary: | Active Server Pages (ASP) is a server-side scripting technology that can be used to
create dynamic and interactive web applications, An ASP page is a Hyper-Text Markup
Language (HTML) page that contains server-side scripts that are processed by the web server
before it is being sent to a client's browser. This server-client relationship is seen to be
practical for reinforced concrete design.
~ The aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive and user friendly website for
reinforced concrete design, leading to the objective of the study, which is to use ASP with
Visual Basic Script (VBScript) to construct a web-based system that can carry out limit state
design of reinforced concrete elements. The scope of this study is to develop the input
components, processing components as well as the output components of the web-based
system, which can carry out design for reinforced concrete beams, slabs and columns. In this
research, a website which allows the client to carry out a rectangular beam, slab or column
design online is created. For beam design, the calculations include design of moment, shear
and torsion reinforcements as well as deflection checking. For slab design, the program is
written to carry out calculations on design of moment reinforcement, shear checking and
deflection checking. For column design, the client can choose whether to do a design of an
axially loaded rectangular column or a uniaxial bending column. For axially loaded column
design, the program is designed to calculate for vertical reinforcement and links for the
column. As for uniaxial bending column, a column interaction diagram is plotted by using
Office Web Component (OWC). The chart is saved as Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) file
and called to be displayed at the client's browser. The client can determine whether the area
of reinforcement provided is adequate by comparing the location of the actual loading point
ii
with the column interaction curve. For all beam, slab and column designs, the results are
displayed on the web page. The program is verified by comparing the results of beam, slab
and column design examples with the results of manual calculation. This developed on line
reinforced concrete design web page adds convenience to the engineers as the web page can
be accessed anytime and anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. The online
reinforced concrete design web page enables multiple clients to use the web page
simultaneously. As the ASP code is executed on the web server, the client's machine does
not need to provide any kind of ASP support. Therefore, engineers can access the web page
using laptops, 3G mobile phones and pocket PCs. |
