Summary:This paper highlights one of the powerful approaches to improve productivity in a shop floor viz, Autonomous Maintenance (AM), a pillar of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Japanese and American manufacturers have successfully tried this approach and the results are very encouraging. This paper explains the underlying concepts, issues, and benefits of AM implementation through a case study. The company discussed in this study is an MNC manufacturing electronic components in Malaysia. After the implementation of AM, the yield loss was reduced by about 65% which resulted in savings of about RM 39,000 per week
