There are major conventional sources of energy that are often used as energy sources such as crude oil and coal. However, these major sources of energy have diminished, as petroleum reserves are getting smaller. This problem will cause the supply of energy sources to be decreased to meet rising energy demands and will affect the country's economic activity. Therefore, to meet the demand for energy resources to be sufficient for every consumer and economic activity, alternative energy sources should be used, such as renewable energy. A renewable energy source is one of the alternatives that can help increase the country's energy resources. This study will try to identify factors that will affect the use of renewable energy in Malaysia. Does this factor provide long-term and shortterm relationships. In addition, this study is also to know the current state of renewable energy in Malaysia. There are six variables chosen in this study: renewable energy as a dependent variable, while GDP per capita, unemployment rate, inflows of foreign direct investment, crude oil price and carbon emissions as independent variables. This study has used secondary data to investigate the current situation of renewable energy such as hydropower, solar, biomass, and biogas using comparable data between years. In addition, the study uses time series data to estimate renewable energy consumption factors in Malaysia between 1981 and 2015. This study has used the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method as empirical study. This study also uses econometric techniques such as Unit Root Test, Bounds Test, Cointegrating and long-run test. The results of the study found significant long-term relationships and positive correlation between renewable energy and per capita GDP per capita, unemployment, foreign direct investment inflows, crude oil prices and carbon emissions in Malaysia.
