Description
Summary:Cardiac skeletal muscle tissue samples from one hundred Duroc and Pietrain swines obtaine from Lipa City Slaughter House were microscopically examined for the presence Sarcocystis infection. Forty-seven of the slaughtered swines were five months of age, while 35 and 18 swines were six-months and four-months old, respectively. Sixty-two (62 percent) of the swines were males, while thirty-eight (38 percent) were females. None of the muscle tissue samples collected from June to December 1994 were found positive for sarcocysts. The negative result may imply either non-susceptibility of Duroc and Pietrain Breed of swines to sarcocysts or the existence of provisions and facilities that lesses the chances of exposure of swines to oocysts. Also, it may have been influenced by the muscle tissue smear technique used, in which some positive cases may have been missed out.
