Modeling the clinical and economic burden of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in the Philippines

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the excess fat accumulation in the liver. NAFLD can advance into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) – a primary cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Beyond the clinical burden, they have high economic consequences. Despite the high prevalence of NAF...

總結:Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the excess fat accumulation in the liver. NAFLD can advance into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) – a primary cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Beyond the clinical burden, they have high economic consequences. Despite the high prevalence of NAFLD in the Philippines, literature on the burden of NAFLD and NASH remains scarce. This study provided a baseline assessment of the burden of NASH in the Philippines. An economic evaluation through Markov modeling of the Filipino adults’ NAFLD clinical experiences was conducted to project both the clinical and economic burden of NASH over the next 20 years; Probabilistic Sensitivity Analysis (PSA) was conducted to account for the uncertainties of the model. This study found that NAFLD and NASH will be a substantial clinical and economic burden in the Philippines. Keywords: NAFLD, NASH, Markov modeling, Probabilistic Sensitivity Analysis
