Summary: | We propose a fresh approach to the design of a scalable and rapidly deployable wireless rain monitoring network. The system is based on power monitoring functions built into all cellular mobile handsets. Preliminary measurements using these sensors, during a major hurricane and the days following, demonstrate their suitability for real time monitoring of rain events at spatial scales of 1 to tens of kilometers. In principle, the sensor network dimensions are limited only by the size of the as-deployed mobile wireless infrastructure. |
