Nasir, R. Mukhtar, H. As countries across the globe transition towards net-zero emissions, the investment in new carbon reduction technologies such as carbon capture is becoming critical. Combined with utilization and storage options (CCUS), the technology has significant potential to capture almost 80 of the CO2 produced globally. To meet existing net-zero targets, estimates suggest that the deployment of CCUS technology must increase by several orders of magnitude within the next two decades. The current research has specific directions and trends to overcome the technological, economic, and social barriers associated with CCUS and carbon capture. This chapter provides a roundup of these emerging trends. The first section discusses the role of carbon capture within the sustainable development framework, followed by the recent offshoot advancements in technology. The chapter closes with a short discussion of their prospects and role in paving a sustainable carbon capture future.
