Peritoneal dialysis is one of the treatment options for patients with kidney failure. A peritoneal access is implanted into the abdomen of these patients through which the dialysis solution is instilled. Solutes are removed from the peritoneal cavity through diffusion and convection. Fluid removal is the result of osmosis. Failure of peritoneal access accounts for approximately 25 percent dropout from peritoneal dialysis (PD) programmes. Elimination of peritoneal access complications will improve treatment outcomes.
