The early investigation of ground target seismic disturbances detection were conventionally implemented with arrays of multiple vertical-component geophones. It is possible, though, to compute a bearing estimate of a ground surface disturbance using a single tri-axial or three-component geophone. Due to lower cost of the tri-axial geophone in recent years, it can become possible to deploy such an installation in civilian or commercial physical security enforcement efforts with automation of signal information processing.
