Description
Summary:This dissertation examines the human factors issues involved in the development of an Intelligent Traffic congestion management System (ITS). Specifically, this dissertation focuses on the important graphical user interface (GUI) usability issues of the system under development. Usability is an important contributor to an overall ITS system performance. Since the function of an ITS system is to mitigate any hazardous situation in the tunnels and along the expressways and roads, excellent ITS system performance is a pre-requisite to enhance the safety of tunnels, expressways and arterial road users. Hazardous situations along the roads and tunnels are mitigated by timely operator actions that trigger traffic diversion plans and the operation of protective systems and equipment The ITS system, in fact, serves to pre-empt the build up of hazardous road and tunnel traffic situations in the first place.
