Beginning with the creation of hunting tools to long distance wireless communications, technologies are becoming more connected to the internet. Internet of Things (IOT), is defined by International Telecommunication Union as, ‘a global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on existing and evolving interoperable information and communication technologies’ [1]. In this Final Year Project, the exploration of the development of android applications would be leveraged on the increase usage of smartphones to help tackle road congestion in Singapore, and also accident reporting. By utilizing GPS on smartphones, the application will have the capacity to send out essential information such as the accurate latitudes and longitudes to other road users to inform them of possible road congestion and even accident(s) in other areas. ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION, ACCESS_WIFI_STATE, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE, CHANGE_WIFI_STATE and INTERNET uses-permission on the manifest.xml will be declared. A GPS Manager class which a GPSTracker.java class extends call from the service implements the LocationListener. These data will be transferred through asynchronous data transmission means. A notification will be made to the recipient(s) once received a client emergency message appears. An enhancement of NXP application which includes the latest GraphView 4.0 to improve user experience. Furthermore, the modification of user settings through the android’s preference API and the display of real time data through the method, BroadcastReceiver, in the sensor fragment have been developed. Innovation will be constantly pushing technologies to new frontiers. In this report, Cohda Wireless technology, GPS, Google Map, Client and Server asynchronous transmission, background service, android applications development and NXP will be emphasized.
