In 2017, the population was estimated at about 66.23 million.1 The age structure has undergone dramatic changes within the past 50 years. In particular, it has been estimated that the proportion of the population 60 years or older will increase substantially, from 11.9% in mid-2017 to 15.9% in 2020. 1
