Summary: | Motorcycle accident is one of the most serious problems in Thailand. The annual record of mortality due to accidents shows a continuous increasing trend. In particulary, the most prevalent incidents caused by traffic accidents have been found among adolescent and risk factor was helmet non-use. The purposes of this descriptive research were to study the selected factors; sex, accidental experience, social support, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit and perceived barrier with the use of motorcycling helmets in secondary school students in region of Thailand. Subjects consisted of 445 secondary school students in four provinces of southern region of Thailand; Songkhla, Trung, Nakhonsrithammarat and Phattalung provinces selected by Multi-stage sampling. The research instruments were; 1) demographic questions 2) social support 3) perceived susceptibility 4) perceived severity 5) perceived benefit 6) perceived barrier, and 7) the use of motorcycling helmets questionnaires. All instruments were tested for content validity by a panel of five experts. The reliability of the instruments by Cronbach’s alpha were .80, .80, .87, .93, and .81 respectively. Statistical methods used to analyze the data include percent, mean, standard deviation and Pearson’s product moment correlation. Major findings were as follows: 1. The use of motorcycling helmets in secondary school students in southern region of Thailand was at medium level. 2. Sex and accidental experience were significantly related to the use of motorcycling helmets in secondary school students in southern region of Thailand at the level of p = .05 (r = .217 and .122 respectively). 3. Social support, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit were positive significantly correlated with the use of motorcycling helmets in secondary school students in southern region of Thailand at the level of p = .05 (r = .167, .848, .295, and .847 respectively). 4. Perceived barrier was negative significantly correlated with the use of motorcycling helmets in secondary school students in Southern Region of Thailand at the level of p = .05 (r = -.338). |
