The experiment was conducted in two stages.The first stage applied to piles with subsequent variation in number and distance between piles in the following arrangements : - (2 x 2) number of piles with distance of 9d c.c. - (3 x 3) number of piles with distance of 4.5d c.c. - (4 x 4) number of piles with distance of 3d c.c. - (5 x 5) number of piles with distance of 2.25d c.c. - (6 x 6) number of piles with distance of 1.8d c.c. - (7 x 7) number of piles with distance of 1.5d c.c. - (8 x 8) number of piles with distance of 1.25d c.c. where d is the diameter of piles. The second stage consisted of 3 main variations in the number of piles with the following arrangement - (2 x 2) number of piles - (3 x 3) number of piles - (4 x 4) number of piles each of which the distance variations between these piles were 9d; 4.5d; 3d; 2.25d; 1.8d; 1,5d and 1.25d. In both stages of the test, the piles were installed in two way - Type A where a portion length of 1/5 of pile length were protruded above ground level. - Type B where the whole length of pile were under the ground level. The results of this experiment showed the increase in bearing capacity of the piled footing system and indicate the optimum distance between piles which gives maximum bearing capacity of the foundation system. Furthermore it pointed out the limit of application of pile group efficiency from where the piles may act as block system.The change of the shearing strength , r , of the soil close to the pile as a result of installation procedure was measured using the small vane apparatus. The result of this experiment may be applicable in the design of foundation system on a thick compressible soil layer and in particular to the Kodya Pontianak. text
