Description
Summary:Gasoline engine does energy conversion from fuel (chemical) energy to mechanical energy. The process started by mixing gasoline with air, then the mixture is injected to the combustion chamber and then ignited by spark plug. In the first stage of development, the mixing system uses carburetor. But along with advancements in sensor and control systems, the mixing of gasoline and air are done by injection system in order to gain operation condition more efficiently. Sensors that monitor the engine condition are data input giver to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and then this ECU produce signal that command the injector to spray the gasoline.

Injection system line can be disturbed by low quality gasoline. This type of gasoline tends to form deposit within injector. It can reduce the flow of gasoline in the condition that has been stated by ECU. The non-stoichiometric mixture of gasolineair will decrease engine power and increase dangerous exhaust gas emission.

To find out the degree of deposit formation in injector, it is needed test apparatus that can measure it qualitatively and quantitatively by observation the spray pattern and measuring the injector spray volume. This test apparatus is called Injector Testing Rig.

The Injector Testing Rig developed in this research can be used as measuring device for injector deposit testing that refers to ASTM D5598 standard. To replace ECU that gives signal to injector, it is developed new control system based on PLC. This choice is made in accordance of simplicity of PLC programming. There are 3 modes programmed into the PLC. The 3 modes equal to 3 modes of engine's rpm. In this research the test is conducted to injectors that represent the deposit free and deposit formed injector. As stated by ASTM D5598, the degree of deposit formation can be found by comparing the injector in before and after condition. When it is needed, the PLC's program can be modified into different mode.
