Description
Summary:Substituent constants g and a of a large umber of m p meta- and pal-a- substituted benzene derivates have been known and determined from the ionization constants of substituted and unsubstituted benzoic acids in aqueous solution. In this experiment, we have attempted to study the substituent effects in aliphatic compounds. The scale is based on the ionization constants of substituted and unsubstituted acetic acid. The ionization constants is calculated bv measuring the acidity of the corresponding acids. A series of groups having -I (negative inductive) effect such -Cl, -OH, -C H and group having +I (positive 6 5 inductive) effect such -CH3 had been studied. The sigma substituent constants values in ethanol:water=3:1 (v/v) are as follows : O\' = +2,08 a ( - C I ) CT = +1.06, CT \' = +0,36, while a - \' = - 0 °2 8 . a (-OH) = (-C6Ho_) a (-CH,) - It was found that there is a close correlation between inductive effects and acidity, either in the solvent system was used, or in water.
