Summary: | Electroless nickel plating is a nickel deposition method on catalytic surface without the use of an external source of electric current. This method uses nickel sulphate as the source of coating element and sodium hypophosphite as a reductor in an aqueous medium. One application of this method is applied on aluminium 2024 which is utilized as an electronic packaging, because the coating layer has excellent hardness property, good corrosion resistance, decorative appearance, and increase the skin effect property. The hardness average value of this coating was achieved at 497 ± 16 VHN, and can be increased by heat treatment.

The aim of this experiment is to obtain a hard nickel layer which has an attractive appearance after heat treatment is being conducted. Variation of temperature, which are : 200, 300, 400 degrees C; and 30, 60, 90 minutes of holding time was used to determine the optimal condition for heat treatment.

The highest nickel layer hardness which has been treated by heat treatment in this experiment was achieved at 400 degrees C for 60 minutes of holding time with the hardness number 986 ± 8 VHN. The best appearance was achieved at 300 degrees C for 60 minutes of holding time with the hardness number 785 ± 7 VHN. |
