Description
Summary:Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and other related calcium phosphate minerals have been utilized as implant materials for many years due to their identical chemical composition and high biocompatibility with natural bones. Hydroxyapatite, chemical formula Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, do not exhibit any cytotoxic effects and can directly bond to bone. At the other side, eggshells that contributes 11% of the total weight of egg and major constituent is CaCO3 will be waste and leads to pollution since microbial action in the environment. Because of that, the objective of the research is to synthesize hydroxyapatite by using waste eggshells as the Ca's source by solution combustion method and characterize it with XRD, FTIR, and SEM/EDS. To obtain the best condition that produce the maximum weight percent of hydroxyapatite powder, the variation of pH and temperatures are necessary.<p>The results of this research are with the variation of pH at 9.5 and 10.5, there is a difference weight of hydroxyapatite. The result from XRD, pH at 9.5, content of hydroxyapatite is higher if it compared with pH 10.5. Beside of that, content of carbonate ion also higher at pH 10.5, that it can be seen from peak which produced from FTIR. For various heat treatment temperatures, temperature at 900oC with different pH at 9.5 and 10.5, it result that content of hydroxyapatite is higher if it compared with whitlockite content as secondary phase. But, temperature at 1000oC, it occurred replace of calcium with magnesium, so at this temperature with whitlockite content is higher than hydroxyapatite. It will be known from all peaks which shown on the XRD and FTIR result. It can be conclude that the process at pH 9.5 and temperature at 900oC we obtained weight percent of hydroxyapatite powder is maximum.
