Performance Test of Pump as Turbine for Electric Generator

One of low cost alternatives of small hydropower resource is the use of pumps as turbines. The action of a pump operates like a water turbine when it is run in reverse. The action of a pump operates like a water turbine when it is run in reverse. Standard pump units when operated in reverse have important advantages over conventional turbines for small-scale hydropower generation; i.e mass production of pumps while turbines are designed for a specific purpose, available for a wide range of heads and flows, available in large number of sizes, low cost, spare parts are easily available, and easy installation. Tests showed that pumps operating as turbine could compete with turbines, with high efficiency in ranges of relatively small power.<p>The objective of the study was to evaluate the 200 SZ pump as turbine systems in terms of performance as to capacity and efficiency. In turbine mode, the flow increases with increasing head. The head available at the turbine is equal to the vertical height between the intake from the stream and the turbine outlet, less the head loss in the penstock. Turbine speed varies according to the load and there is a different efficiency curve for each speed and head. Evaluation of the 200 SZ pump as turbine showed that the modificated impeller has better efficiency than the original. This result is found from similarity law of turbine with 250 SZ pump as turbine. From test result, efficiency is lower than efficiency with similarity. Therefore, more research must be done to improve the performance and optimize the operation of pump as turbine. text
