Description
Summary:Railway transportation is passengers and goods transportation which have advantages, especially in big load capacity, efficiency, safety, and fluency in transportation compared to other transportations. To achieve that purpose, railway transportation (like locomotive, cart, and wagon) must operate as optimum as possible without getting breakdown or unscheduled down time that caused by damage of its components. Reliability of that transportation determined fluency, safety, and success of train operation.

One of all system in railways is suspension system, which are consists of three types of coil spring. There are journal spring, inner bolster spring and outer bolster spring. In 2006 it was identified that journal spring is the most recent suspension system component to be failed. So it caused unscheduled down time.

Because of that reason, in final project writing, writer does the failure analysis include design aspect, material aspect, manufacturing aspect, and the form of failure. Design aspect had result that safety factor was enough to bear the static and dynamic load, but that coil spring had a short fatigue life. Material aspect showed that material had chemical composition and microstructure which was appropriated to the standard, but they had inclusion size over from the standard. Manufacturing aspect identified that the process which was done in Balai Yasa Manggarai didn't appropriate to the standard also. In conclusion, the failure that happened was fatigue failure and brittle fracture was caused by deviation of manufacturing from standard and inclusion in material.
