Summary: | Biodiesel is a fuel that has a bright future in the world especially in Indonesia. Because the production and consumption rate of crude oil in Indonesia is 500 billion barrels per year thus crude oil reserve is 9 billion barrels. With this condition, Indonesian Crude oil reservoir will be empty in the next 18 years (Bappenas, (2006)).
If the kapok seeds will be used as a biodiesel material then the other pasrt of kapok has to be usaed optimally. In this project the components of kapok fiber will be reseached so that it can be processed further on and can be sold with a higher price.
Researches in separation of the components of kapok fiber have been. In this research, methode proposed by Cao (1996) in corn cob will be used as primarry methode. Pretreatement process involves the steeping of kapok fiber in 2.9 M NH4OH. This resulted in removing 77-100% of the lignin along with almost all the acetate from cellulosic residue. This process is called lignification. Then the kapok fiber is extracted with HCl 0,3M. This process can removes up to 100% of hemicellulose in the kapok fiber then only cellulose left as residues. |
