Summary: | Usnea sp. (Usneaceae) thallus is traditionally used as a medicinal substance due to its usnic acid content which has antimicrobial activity. In this research usnic acid was isolated using petroleum ether and premium. Crude drug was macerated using both solvents and the isolate was purified using acetone, yielded a yellow orthorhombic crystal with a melting point of 203-205oC. The isolate was identified by ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectrophotometries. The yield of usnic acid by maceration using petroleum ether was 0.49-0.78%. <br />
