Summary: | Rice husk is produced from paddy milling and it is about 20% of paddy's weight. From the paddy production in Indonesia, this rice husk should be available in a quite large number. Gasification process of rice husk emits residual gas, that is Carbon Monoxide. This brings into suggestion in using rice husk as carburization medium.
Energizer of Scallop Clam (Amusium spp.) shell that contains Calcium Carbonate had been proved to increase the effectiveness of carburization process using coconut charcoal as medium. Therefore, research of the effectiveness of this energizer using Rice Husk as carburization medium is needed.
Combination of composition between medium (rice husk) and Scallop Clam Shell energizer has been done from 0%wt until 50%wt of energizer. Carburization process is carried out at 950oC for 120 minutes, and then followed by heat treatment process at 900oC for 30 minutes in order to find Effective Case Depth of every combination.
Results from hardness testing demonstrate that highest ECD (Effective Case Depth) is achieved at composition addition of 30%wt energizer with value of 0,98 mm. In general, the experiment shows that rice husk without further treatment gives optimum value of ECD. It proves that energizer of Scallop Clam shell can be used to increase effectiveness of pack carburization with rice husk as medium.
