Summary:In general endocarditis is an infection of the heart valve, caused by bacteria that multiply and grow to form vegetation. Once the heart valves are destroyed, surgery is required. However, if antibiotics are able to kill the bacteria and cure the infection, surgery is not needed. This final project discuss the microbiological aspects from mathematical point of view. The effect of antibiotic on those bacteria analyzed by partial differential equation to describe the behavior of endocarditis. The combination of growth-killing and diffusion models used to define the phenomena. The growth-killing model describes the growth and decrease of bacteria in that vegetation. The diffusion model describes the penetration of antibiotics into the bacteria vegetation and antibiotic concentration inside the vegetation. Two possible modes of administration are considered, continuous and intermittent administrations. The important factors from this model are the antibiotic concentration, the bacteria density, the growth rate and killing rate of bacteria, and the diffusion coefficient. Discritization of model with Explicit method can simulate the administration of continuous antibiotic concentration more effective than intermittent antibiotic concentration.
