Description
Summary:Asphalt, according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is a dark brown to black material, bituminous solid or semisolid present in most crude oil and in some natural deposits. Asphalt has a lot of uses, such as for pavement mix, roof coating, and waterproofing for industrial equipment. Buton Asphalt (Asbuton) is very potential natural resources because it is one of the most important raw materials for construction. Before Buton asphalt is used for pavement mix, asphalt is extracted from bitumen solid and then it mixed with granular rocks.

This non-economical process leads to the preliminary study of Buton asphalt utilization in road construction. The experiment done by making granular asphalt through heating (roasting) dan by extracting asphalt using paraffinic and non paraffinic solvents.

The experiment result shows that Buton asphalt is not capable to be used as road construction through granulating process. Instead, the asphalt should be extracted from its bitumen first. This is as a result of asphalt's physical property that stays in sticky form in atmospheric condition.
