Description
Summary:Rare earth metals has been used in many industries such as superconductor production, LCD, permanent magnet, high quality optic and catalyst. Rare earth elements has many similarities in physical and chemical properties to each other so it is difficult to separate. Separation method using chelating agent has given a highly effectiveness to separate rare earth element. A ligand containing 2-(2-aminoethoxy)benzoate moiety has been reported as chelating agent for rare earth metal ion. The ligand was synthesized from methyl salycilate and etanolamine by etherification reaction. In this research, similar ligand have been synthesized from methyl salycilat and triethanolamine to furnish 2,2',2''-[nitrilotris(ethane-2,1-diyloxy)]-trimethylbenzoate. The products were characterized using infrared spectrophotometry to identify function group and metal-ligand complex formation was identified by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The UV-Vis spectrophotometry analysis showed a new absorption peak at 294 nm with extinction coefficient for La3+ at pH 3.5 = 1.83 x 105 M-1cm-1. This peak was guess as peak of complex of ligan with La3+ ion.
