Summary: |
Distribution and abundance of juvenile penaeid Central Java was conducted during September 1st - November 15th 1989. Juvenile penaeid prawns were collected with a net fitted with a 2x2 mm2 mesh (sondong), which width and height of the opening of the sondong was 2 m and 1 m, respectively. The juvenile penaeid prawns were sampled six times at two weeks intervals from four different sampling stations, both during the flood and the ebb tides, namely, on September 1st (Wp. I), September 15th (Wp. II), October 1 st (Wp. III), October 15th (Wp. IV), October 31th (Wp. V), and November 15th 1989 (Wp. VI). The distances of the sampling stations from the estuary upstream, were 100 m ( St. A), 1500 m (St. B), 3000 m (St. C), and 5000 m (St. D). Juvenile of five species of penaeids were found in the Bengawan River estuary, namely, Hetapenaeus dobsoni, M. ensis, Penaeus merguiensis, P. monodon, and P. latisuloatus. Result of analysis of variance and Tukey test (P<0.05) on the abundance of each penaeid species showed that the abundance of H. dobsoni, both during the flood and the ebb tide, at Wp. I x St. D, and Wp. II x St. D was higher than at other Wp. x St. The abundance of H. ensis during the flood tide at Wp. I was higher than at other Wp., while during the ebb tide the abundance did not differ significantly between St., between Wp., and between Wp. x St. The abundance of P. merguiensis during the flood tide at Wp. I x St. D, and Wp. II x St. D was higher than at other Wp. x St., while during the ebb tide at Wp. I x St. D was higher than at other Wp. x St.. The abundance of P. monodon during the flood at Wp. I x St. A, Wp. II x St. A, and Wp. II x St. B was higher than other Wp. x St., while during the ebb tide it was higher at Wp. II x St. A than at other Wp. x St. The abundance of P. latisulcatus during the flood tide at Wp. I x St. A and Wp. II x St. A was higher than at other Wp. x St.', while during the ebb tide it was higher at Wp. I x St. A higher than at other Wp. x St. Stepwise multiple regression analysis on the abundance of each species of penaeid showed that the abundance of H. dobsoni increased with decreasing water current and increasing of organic content the substrate. The abundance of H. ensis increased with increasing salinity. The abundance of P. merguiensis increased with decreasing water current. The abundance of P. monodon and P. latisulcatus increased with decreasing organic content of the substrate.
