Description
Summary:Utilization of CFC and HCFC refrigerants will be ended soon. Pure hydrocarbon (HC) substances and its mixtures are considered as the alternative substitutes. Using HC and its mixtures as new refrigerants needs a complete knowledge of its characteristics. One of the important characteristics is the boiling heat transfer coefficient. In this Final Project, series of experiments were carried out to investigate the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient.

Experimental equipments were designed and built, then series of experiments are carried out with R-22 (HCFC), HC-22 (HC), and [R-290+R-134] (less-flammable HC) refrigerants. Tested refrigerant was conditioned at a saturated state; an electric heater immersed in the refrigerant pool of liquid was used as the boiling surface to generate heat flux. Boiling heat transfer coefficient is determined as the ratio between the heat flux on the boiling surface and its excess temperature. The experiments were carried out at various refrigerants saturated temperature and for various heat flux value. The experimental results were analyzed, and then comparisons between the three tested refrigerants were made.

Some boiling correlation equations proposed by researchers were used to predict boiling characteristics of tested refrigerants. Then the experimental results were compared with the correlation equations. Based on the analysis results, modified correlation equations are proposed for the tested refrigerants.
