The quality improvement of low carbon steel is done by pack carburizing process followed by hardening process.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Die and punch used in this research is applied for making chain fastener for Honda motorcycle. This die and punch has a wide cutting surface area and angled profile. The quality of die and punch is determined based on the amount of the product resulted.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Pack carburizing is done using 90%wt coconut charcoal and 10%wt BaCO3, at 950 degrees C for 3 hours and continued by furnace cooling. Furthermore, the hardening process is done at 900 degrees C for 30 minutes and followed by quenching process in water.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Carburizing process improve carbon content from 0,22%wt to 1,03%wt. The highest hardness reaches 1037 VHN by water quenching process. The 560 VHN hardness depth resulted reached 2,5 mm from the specimen's surface by water quenching process.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The test result in PT. XYZ, die and punch can produce 900 pieces. This result is considered good enough since the cutting load is high. From the test data in PT. XYZ for die and punch made from as carburized low carbon steel showed that the quality is dependent on the cutting load. text
