Description
Summary:Anacardic acid has been isolated from the natural CNSL of Anacardium occidentale Linn. by column chromatography using petroleum ether (40-60°C): diethyl ether:formic acid=70:30:2 as the eluent. It gave yellowish thick liquid Thin layer chromatographic analysis with the same eluent showed one spot (Rf=0,78); while analysis by high performance liquid chromatography on ODS-C18 column with eluent MeOH:HOAc 4%=85:15 showed three main components. Hydrogenation of the isolated anacardic acid by Raneynickel catalyst, was done in two ways: with and without the addition of hydrogen. The latter method gave 98,85% white crystals with melting point 84-85°C. High performance liquid chromatographic analysis showed two peaks with different retention times compared to those of the parent compounds. The mayor compound (95%) very probable (15:0) anacardic acid; while the minor product was suggested as the (13:0) anacardic acid. These conclusions were evaluated from the 1H-NMR spectrum of the hydrogenated anacardic acid which showed no peak of of ofinic bond. A mass spectroscopic analysis should be further investigated.
