Description
Summary:Purifying methyl ester, the product of transesterification, into biodiesel is one of the main part in producing biodiesel. Nowadays, the most common method used in purifying biodiesel is water-wash purifying. This method has some weaknesses, such as long time and high cost operation. There is an alternative developed to handle this, which is methyl ester purifying using adsorption method.

The main purpose of this research is to understand practically the characteristic of montmorillonite activation compared with the quality of biodiesel after purifying. The other one is to know how effective this method is, compared with water-wash purifying. Biodiesel produced from the raw material crude palm oil is used in this research, and clay bentonite from Bogor as the adsorbent. This research is divided in four main steps, which are the making of adsorbent, the making of methyl ester, methyl ester purifying into biodiesel, and the last, biodiesel quality analysis. Based on characteristic of adsorption curve, from each type of the adsorbents, one of which is the most effective, will be chosen.

According to the result of this research, it is montmorillonite activated by acid treatment followed by pilarisation gives the best purifying result, with the use of adsorbent by 0.5% of biodiesel mass. Adsorption method using unactivated montmorillonite, with the adsorbent use of 2% of biodiesel mass, is the best choice in biodiesel purifying. It is the most effective way compared with other methods of clay activation.
