Use of phsycotropic substance repetitively for long period was cause dependence. The purpose of this research was to study the liability of nutmeg mace to induce dependence in Swiss Webster mice. Dependenceinducing ethanol extract of nutmeg mace was observed by sensitization test using open field apparatus and Condition Place Preference test. In sensitization methode, mice were given the extract for five concecutive days and their motor activities were observed. Extract administration then was discontinued for 21 days. On the 22 nd day, mice were given the extract at the same dose and its motor activities were observed. In CPP test, mice were given the extract in certain compartement of CPP apparatus for four concecutive days. On the fifth day, mice were placed in CPP apparatus without administration of the extract. Then, the sojourn time of mice in each compartemen were calculated. In sensitization test, administration of extract increased motor activies but the increase was not significant compared to motor activies in the former administration. It showed mild sensitization. In CPP test, mice that were given the extract had longer sojourn time in compartement associated with the extract that showed rewarding effect. Mild sensitization and rewarding effect suggesting the liability of the extract to induce dependence. <br /> text
