ANALYSIS OF PWR SPENT FUEL LEAKAGE FROM UNDERGROUND REPOSITORY AS ONE WAY FOR NUCLEAR ENERGY PROMOTION
Misconception of the public concerning the nuclear energy, especially about spent fuel should be corrected. To improve the situation, providing and exposing correct information to the public regarding many aspects about nuclear energy is a must. Analysis of nuclear spent fuel leakage from undergroun...

Analysis of nuclear spent fuel leakage from underground repository can be considered is one of ways for improving the public perception about nuclear energy.<p>Nuclides in the spent fuel which consider in this analysis are the nuclides with very long life-time (more than 1000 years). The analysis employs a self developed code using the Runge-Kutta-4 method with Delphi 7 language programming. The results show that along the time from 0 - 200.000 years, U-235, U-236 and U-238 play an important role on the total number of spent fuel in the underground repository. Meanwhile, Pu-239, Pu-240 and Pu-242 dominate the total toxicity of the spent fuel. The total number of nuclides does not change, so much since U-238 has very long half-life (4,6 billion years). The total toxicity after 200.000 years become 0,52 % of the initial toxicity. The number of nuclide and the toxicity decrease with the time. The large nuclide number density is not directly proportional with the higher toxicity, or vice-verse. text |
