Description
Summary:The effect of ZnCl2 as additive on polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane performance and morphology has been studied. Membranes were prepared by phase inversion process. The compositions of casting solution were 20% wt polysulfone (PSf) and 0-5% wt ZnCl2 in N,N-dimethylacetamide. It was found that the addition of ZnCl2 increased permeability and permselectivity of membranes. The presence of ZnCl2 in casting solution produced membranes with a thicker skin and decreased the macrovoid shown by SEM photograph. IR spectroscopy was used to study the interaction between ZnCl2 and PSf. The addition of ZnC12 to PSf induced a red shift to IR spectra assigned to a symmetric vibrational stretching because of interaction of ZnCl2 with PSf chain. The measurements of reduced viscosity and conductivity in dilute concentration regions of PSf at various ZnCl2 concentrations, indicated that the addition of ZnCl2 to PSf showed polyelectrolyte behavior. <br />
