Description
Summary:Hydroxyapatite has been synthesized using a precipitation method. Precipitation method is a reaction between acid and base that produces a crystalline solid upon drying. Raw materials that were used are Calcium Oxide and Phosphoric acid. Controlled Synthesis process parameter is pH of solution while variables being compared are heat treatment temperatures. Heat treatments were conducted to obtain a study of the efect of heat treatment temperatures towards the particle size and crystallinity of synthesized hydroxyapatite. Characterization of hydroxyapatite powder were obtained using XRD, FTIR and SEM. Scherrer method was used to obtain mean crystallite size which were between 80-120 nm. Landi method was used to obtain the crystallinity of synthesized hydroxyapatite and the crystallinity were between 32-92%. Morphological investigation using SEM showed particle size in the range of 30nm up to 750nm with spherical to granular shape. The main impurity was carbonate identified by FTIR. The secondary phase was Calcium Oxide which is a thermal degredation of hydroxyapatite upon heat treatment.
