Summary:Most of plain carbon steel corrosion in seawater are due to corrosive contaminants. One of contaminant which enhance steel corrosion rate is Sulfide. Steel corrosion in seawater can be controlled by inhibitor addition. Potassium MetaVanadate, which is known as corrosion inhibitor for CO2 absorption system, can decrease steel corrosion rate in seawater containing sulfide originated by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) metabolism.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The objective of this research is to study the performance of Vanadate as corrosion inhibitor in artificial seawater containing sulfide non metabolite. This objective will be fulfilled by measuring steel corrosion rate in artificial seawater containing sulfide with various inhibitor concentrations, using the Tafel method. The corrosion inhibition mechanism will be studied using cyclic voltammetry method. Meanwhile corrosion product will be identified using X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD).<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The experimental results show that sulfide addition into artificial seawater increases steel corrosion rate. Vanadate has reduced steel corrosion rate in seawater contaminated by sulfide, but cannot categorized as an effective inhibitor due to its inhibition effectiveness which is less than 95%. Indeed, vanadate can be classified to dangerous inhibitor. Generally, the oxidation reaction of steel in artificial seawater contaminated by sulfide with Vanadate addition is a single step irreversible reaction, with unstable product.
