This research concern on paddy drying using two kinds of dryer: bench and pilot scaled moving bed. Objectives of this research are to compare two steps of the drying process on bench and pilot scaled, study the thermal shock effect on dried paddy and find effective drying time. Two steps drying uses two drying bed in the column. First step is the preheated, using drying air output from the second step. Meanwhile the second step below is the main dryer. Mass and heat transfer of moving bed dryer can be evaluated. Nusselt and Sherwood number for pilot scale is defined with equation Nu=0.776.Re0.474.Pr0.105 and Sh=1.131.Re0.4365.Sc0.866. For bench scale the mathematical mode can be defined in equation Nu=1.098.Re1.591.Pr 0.992 and Sh =1.038.Re0.223.Sc1.573. On the drying air temperature around 65oC until 75oC, the paddy still has good quality and shape but on 95oC, 87.5% of the paddy will break after it has been grinded. |
