Summary: | JIS SUH11 alloy steel is one of the heat resistant alloys. It contain a high amount of chrom and silicon to increase corrosion and heat resistance. This steel mostly used for valve of combustion engine. For this application, valve must have a high hardness and ductility. In practice, the hardness after tempering, was out of the standard requirements for valve product. This research was conducted to study the relationship between hardness and tempering parameters, along with the metalurgical aspect after heat treatment process.<p>In this research, the hardness and microstructure data of as product, as annealed, as quenched, and as tempered are observed. Tempering was done by varied the temperature and holding time. Tempering temperatures were varied as 650oC, 680oC, 720oC, and 750oC, while the holding time were varied as 30 minute, 60 minute, and 90 minute. The hardness measurement was done using mickrovickers method. The result from this research is tempering curve. The curve can be used as reference for selecting tempering parameters to obtain the desired hardness.<p>Tempering process that should be done to obtain standard hardness value for JIS SUH11 valve, is tempered at 720-750oC for 30 minute, 60 minute, or 90 minute. To make the process more efficient, it is recommended to apply 30 minutes holding time. <br />
