Description
Summary:Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) pulp is one of non wood cellulose sources which can be used for producing cellulose acetate (CA). Infrared spectroscopy showed the characteristics of acetyl group at 1237,4 cm-1. The acetyl content of kenaf CA is 40.40% and commercial CA is 40.11%. CA membrane have been prepared by using phase inversion method in three varied compositions, i.e. 14, 16, and 18 wt.% of CA. The membrane characteristics were determined at three varied applied pressures, i.e. 1, 2, and 3 kgf/cm2. The highest water permeability was obtained by membranes of 14 wt.% CA, shown by fluxes of 253.75+0.00 L/m2h for kenaf CA and 137.57+3.53 L/m2h for commercial CA at 3 kgf/cm2. The lowest MWCO was obtained by membrane of 18 wt.% CA, shown by fluxes of 4.8.105 L/m h for kenaf CA and 1.1.105 L/m h for commercial CA at 1 kgf/cm. SEM analysis showed that commercial CA membrane was denser than kenaf CA membrane. The highest tensile strength was obtained by membranes of 18 wt.% CA, shown by Young modulus 6.85E+07 for kenaf CA membrane and 5.60E+07 for commercial CA membrane. Kenaf CA membrane and commercial CA membrane have the same efficiency in water purification with 100% rejection towards) ions. The highest permeability was obtained by membranes of 14 wt.% CA, shown by a flux of 429.04+1.77 L/m2h for kenaf CA and 201.78+3.06 L/m h for commercial CA at 3. <br />
