Summary: | Poly(vinyl saccharide)s are usually water-soluble and expected to be biocompatible. Therefore poly(vinyl saccharide)s are expected to exhibit specific properties in the field of pharmaceutical, medicine, and cosmetics. Poly(vinyl saccharide)s can be prepared by chemoenzymatic reaction from vinyl compounds and saccharide. Using this method, the monomer was synthesized by enzymatic reaction and then polymerized chemically by using some kinds of water-soluble and water-insoluble initiators. The effect of monomer concentration and different kind of initiators toward the polymerization of glucose-1B-ethyl (meth)acrylate (GE(M)A) were studied. Stucture analysis by 1H-NMR showed that the monomer had only B conformation. % yield of product was higher when the monomer concentration increase since the collision between one molecule and the other was more intense. GPC data showed that the shorter decomposition time of the initiator resulted the polymer with lower molecular weight. It was also showed that the molecular weight of PGEMA was higher than PGEA. The monomer concentration and different kind of initiators gave the significant effects on the polymerization of glucose-1B-ethyl (meth)acrylate. <br />
