Description
Summary:Hydrotreating is a process which has an important role in petroleum refinery plant. The purpose of this process is to remove the contaminants of petroleum such as sulfur, nitrogen and metals. This process is performed by using catalysts which need gamma alumina as support. Gamma alumina is still imported so there must be efforts to produce gamma alumina in our own country.

The objective of this research is to determine the conditions and procedures which yield gamma alumina extrudates with the characteristics of hydrotreating catalyst support.

This research focuses on improving the procedures of gamma alumina synthesis created by the early research group and forming the catalyst support. In this research gamma alumina was synthesized through two methods, such as sol-gel method and precipitation method. The raw material was technical aluminum sulfate and the gelling agent or precipitator was urea. The gamma alumina was subsequently formed into catalyst support through extrusion. The experiments were carried out by varying the synthesis method, the amount of urea and the extrudate composition. The products were characterized by testing the crystallinity, surface area and thermal behavior. According to the experiment results, gamma alumina with the largest surface area (244 m2/g) was synthesized through sol-gel method, the urea quantity was two times that of stoichiometry and the calcination temperature was 750 degrees C. Extrudates which had the best mechanical integrity were obtained by means of boehmite and acetic acid addition.
