Summary:Education embraces social, culture, and economic dimensions. Social and culture dimensions are about how the education becomes the begining of people toward social mobility in their life. Afterwards, the dimensions create values in society. Economic dimension in education is an effort to create manpower as the core of the regional and national development. The context in regional development by managing the nature resources, manpower development is an important component. Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan) is an institution which can motivate the dimensions to increase inhabitants prosperous by managing the region nature resources.<p>The purpose of using this institution by is to get benefit of the nature's potential. It shows that the region is natural resources have not been optimalized yet. But on the other side, the focus is not only about manpower but also about the competencies of the vocational schools. The problems in this study are to find out people preferences toward vocational high school and to find out suitable competencies to contribute to region is natural resources development.<p>This study used qualitative and quantitative technique analysis. People preferences are based on questionnaires which is to know their motivation toward high vocational education. Quantitative data were helping to support this study especially refer to the competencies of the vocational and the connection with industry sector and agriculture sector.<p>The result of this study is that most of people in Asahan Regency understand about manpower development. But accesibility to these Vocational High Schools could be one of reasons for lack us for the vocational education. Besides, to carry out the region nature resources as the potential, the local eminent, that have not been optimalized yet by vocational education, brings an attention to the competencies. The focus to the competency could be a support for people to give their participation to the Vocational High School. <br /> <br />
