Preparation of a plastic ceramic body with a variety of homogeneous water content for ceramic practical or research is not easy to obtain. This shows the need for a filter press system that could produce a plastic cake with a homogeneous and determine water content. The observation of the forming pr...

This shows the need for a filter press system that could produce a plastic cake with a homogeneous and determine water content. The observation of the forming processes on a ceramic plastic body with determine and homogeneous water content and clay content to the linear firing shrinkage characteristic has faced some in-homogeneity problem in the fired properties.
The design and manufacture of a laboratory filter press has been carried out and some initial testing has been undertaken. It is found that some slurry leakage occurred from the seal between the plunger and the outer cylinder. Preliminary research on the effect of water content and the amount of ball clay to the fired linear shrinkage of a plastic ceramic body through extrusion has been done with manual mixing. Due to the in-homogeneity observed on shrinkage data an assumption was made that this has a correlation with the plastic body property.
It has been observed that the firing shrinkage of the extruded samples for composition I (50% clay, 25% water content) and IV (50% ball clay, 21% water content) is higher than firing shrinkage for composition II (25% ball clay, 17,5% water content) and III (25% ball clay, 15,5% water content), which is between 4,7-5,5% and 2,1-2,6%. Even though for manually prepared plastic body extruded samples, the difference were not significant and homogeneous. The inhomogeneity shows the need for a close monitoring of the plastic body characteristic, hence the filter press system should be improved further.
text
