INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/11500 In an attempt to develop a study of recycled plastic material separation using jig separation process, a research of parametric operation density of fluid is conducted. This research uses plastic sampel from recycling centre in small pieces condition, which are ABS, AS, and IM. Based on the preliminary research, the increase of the fluid density; by addition of Magnesium Sulfate solution; causes plastic material to have a tendency to float and occurs with the decrease of settling velocity. Various fluid density values (1.004-1.053 gr/cm2) are significantly increasing the separation effectiveness up to ± 50%. Increase of fluid density value also shorten separation time process up to ±30 seconds. This results state that the separation time of jig process also depends on fluid density, not only depends on amplitude and frequency based on previous research2]. Drag force and Buoyant force is the main factor that affects this result. The enlargement of the reactor dimension is causing the decrease of amplitude on the fluid in the same force of pump. On jig separation process with same pump force it is known that the separation process on the big scale reactor takes more time with same actual amplitude on both reactor. Therefore it can be concluded that enlargement of the reactor dimension does not significantly affect on separation effectiveness of plastic matter in jig separation method. The important factor which takes account on the modification of reactor dimension is HF/A ratio. The result shows that jig separation process is inefficient and longer at HF/A <1. Continuous reactor applies in pump debit of 5,21x10-3m3/sec and stream velocity of 0,0174 m/sec. An experiment to determine feeding rate on continuous reactor using water shows that separation effectiveness is < 5%. By increasing fluid density, separation effectiveness improves to 47% at feeding rate of 400 gr/minute with fluid density of 1,0153 gr/cm3. text
