| Summary: | Asphalt is the main material in road paving. The main constituent of asphalt is bitumen that occurs in nature as rock asphalt, tar pitch or as crude oil distillation product. Indonesia has large reserves of natural rock asphalt in Buton island but the properties is not suitable to be used in road construction because it is too soft and its bituminous content is too varied. A method that can be used to solve this problem is extraction. The main purpose of this research is to find out the best method to process natural rock asphalt from Lawele mine in Buton. Thi research is focused on the pre-extraction treatment and solvent selection for extraction. The pre-extraction treatment covers size reduction and roasting. The result shows that highest extraction yield is at 1 mm-sized asphalt that has been roasted in 120°C for 30 minutes and the most suitable solvent is TCE. |
